Zhangjiajie in central China’s Hunan Province is turning its links with hit films and animation into new tourism experiences, giving visitors more ways to engage with the city beyond its famous landscapes. The city’s distinctive quartz sandstone peaks inspired the floating mountains in “Avatar”, while its landscapes also influenced the setting of animated hit “All Wishes Come True”. At the renovated Dayong Ancient Town, visitors can step into the fantasy world of “Monster Hunt”, interacting with costumed characters, playing games and earning tokens that can be spent at more than 50 local businesses. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park has also introduced film-inspired cultural products, with related consumption rising over 200 percent. The approach is helping attract overseas visitors, with Zhangjiajie receiving 994,500 inbound tourists this year, up 20 percent from last year.
