Infrared cameras in northeast China’s Heilongjiang’s Greater Khingan Range have captured rare new footage of the nationally protected sable, revealing the elusive animal nimbly leaping across snow-covered ground and tree branches, its distinctive pale throat patch glowing in the night. The images were recorded in Kandu River National Wetland Park, where more than 80 infrared cameras have been deployed across 4,000 hectares. Combined with ground surveys and drone monitoring, the system forms a tech-enabled, three-dimensional observatory that continuously tracks wildlife in the region. Researchers say the latest sightings provide valuable data for understanding sable behaviour and underscore the strong progress of China’s science-driven biodiversity conservation efforts.
