At Marintec China 2025 in Shanghai, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) unveiled a pioneering smart farm designed for ship applications. The facility features a “vegetable-mushroom symbiosis” system, enabling year-round cultivation of edible fungi, vegetables, and fruits. “By letting vegetables absorb carbon dioxide and mushrooms release it, the system allows both to grow in the same chamber…,” said Chang Yu, vice president of CSSC International Engineering Company. The design reduces energy use typically required to manage temperature differences and ventilation at sea. Pesticide-free and capable of growing over 120 varieties, the farm ensures high standards of quality and safety. Using about 30 kilowatt-hours a day, it produces roughly five kilograms each of lettuce and mushrooms, lowering energy costs far below global standards. Visitors, including shipowners, praised the innovation. “This is the solution… This is fresh food not only good for health, this is for their mental refreshment,” said ABM Zahidul Islan. The smart farm promises fresh produce even in remote islands and arid inland regions. Source: China Central Television
